Lactobacillus is a bacterial strain that was isolated from humans and was found to have excellent tolerance for the acid conditions in the stomach. The Lactobacillus species is more effective than many other bacteria in surviving the passage through the gastrointestinal tract to effectively colonize the digestive tract and balance the intestinal microflora. Lactobacillus has been proven to resist gastric acid and bile, adhere to mucosa of human intestine, colonize the human gastrointestinal tract, and fight against potential pathogens such as E.coli, streptococci, and clostridia and salmonella species.
Lactobacillus Casei strains of the Lactobacillus species are found naturally in fermented vegetables, milk, and meat, as well as in the intestine, the human mouth, and the environment. The name lactobacillus casei was first used in 1904, and the name suggests its close relationship to cheese: both casei and casein (the primary protein in milk) originate from the Latin word caseus, meaning cheese. As members of the genus Lactobacillus, lactobacillus casei are Gram-positive rod-shaped cells.
They differ from other lactobacilli in several ways. They are smaller in size than L. bulgaricus, lactobacillus acidophilus, and lactobacillus. helveticus, and are facultatively heterofermentative, and mesophilic. Because KE-99 is sub-species of lactobacillus casei, it is safe and has the ability to grow in the intestinal tract. L. casei has been used in many products around the world and is a well-known and documented species of lactobacillus that has proven probiotic effects. It is often included with other beneficial bacterium to re-establish balanced microflora in the intestinal tract after antibiotic therapy. It is generally considered safe and approved for use in food products.
The lactobacillus casei sub-species, KE-99, was selected for its superior probiotic qualities. The primary effect of a probiotic is to reduce the likelihood of pathogenic organisms from establishing themselves and infecting the intestinal tract of a host. In order to accomplish this, the beneficial bacterium overwhelm the enteric sites to become the predominant bacterium present, and consume a significant portion of the nutrients which compromise or possibly eliminate the establishment and/or growth of any unwanted bacteria. (Competitive exclusion) In laboratory tests, however, KE-99 has demonstrated the ability to actually remove already established pathogenic bacteria in vitro (example: enterohemorrhagic E. coli 0157:H7). These bacteria often enter the intestinal tract via consumption of contaminated food and/or drink. This remarkable ability to reduce certain forms of pathogenic bacteria in vitro (currently being tested in vivo in swine) is one of the features that sets KE-99 apart as a superior probiotic.
A number of products on the market contain multiple bacterial strains. KE-99 was intentionally formulated with just one highly effective Lactobacillus casei KE-99 strain. A hardy single strain such as KE-99 has been shown to be much more effective than multiple strains because of its superior ability to attach to enteric sites and establish itself while multi-strains compete with each other and are often merely evacuated. The overall benefits of other strains of intestinal bacteria are well known, but they are meaningless unless they can actually attach to the intended site.
We have surveyed 20 different probiotic products that were tested for organism viability and compared the findings with the declared amount on the packaging (these studies were conducted at a public university in California). Most recommended refrigeration. This would mean while those products are transported or on retailers' shelves, the probiotic effect is being lost. None of these products had even 1/10 of the number of organisms declared on the packaging. Products that deliver such a small number of live organisms can have little or no real health benefits. KE-99 LACTO avoids this problem through its unique formulation, stringent controls through the manufacturing and packaging process and a more effective package.
The KE-99 LACTO Capsule is packaged in a double foil packet that does not need refrigeration. There are two capsules per packet, the recommended daily dose. Each capsule contains 5 billion live bacteria. Lactobacillus species loose their viability in the presence of heat, moisture, and oxygen. Because KE-99 is a more durable strain than many other lactobacillus species and because of its oxygen and moisture proof package, the long-term stability of the live organisms is protected. It is stable for 2 years when stored at room temperature. Many competitive products employ a single container which has to be opened and closed daily - exposing the other capsules or tablets to oxygen and causing them to loose potency over a short period of time.

However, our tablets are coated with a cellulose compound to protect them and ensure viability after the container has been opened. Each capsule contains 5 billion live bacteria and we recommend 2 tablets as daily dosage. KE-99 is a more durable strain than many other lactobacillus species and because of its oxygen and moisture proof package, the long-term stability of the live organisms is protected for 2 years when stored at room temperature (before opening the bottle). Once the bottle is opened, it should be refrigerated and is guaranteed stable for 1 year.
